Economic Development

SMPC engages in economic development by providing expertise to local groups, writing economic development plans, and consulting on economic development and community development projects. SMPC also assists local groups in procuring economic development funding through the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and the the U.S. Department of Commerce, Economic Development Administration (EDA).

In February 2020, SMPC and the W.E. Upjohn Institute received a grant through EDA to update the Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) for the region. The CEDS is a vital planning document that can lead to the creation and retention of jobs and increased private investment, advance innovation, enhance the manufacturing capacities of the region, provide workforce development opportunities, and grow the economic ecosystem that attracts foreign direct investment. The updated CEDS will outline the economic conditions of the region, assess the strengths and weaknesses of the regional economy, and provide a blueprint for future economic improvement.

SMPC is currently recruiting those who represent the economic interests of the region to serve on the CEDS Strategy Committee. If you are interested, please see the press release below for more information and apply using the link below.
